My friend wants a painting of paul newman because it looks like his dad... this is what i have so far. this is only the second one i've done that is supposed to actually look like someone.
i know i'm not great at it...i have to fix the one eye and once i paint it i was wondering if you had any advice on the jacket. doing it exact, with the hounds tooth i think its called, will drive me crazy, but i was thinking maybe it could be alright if i just drew the criss cross pattern? i thought if someone could give me advice it would be you.
thanks for anything you could help me with.

I'm not sure who I'm talking to, but you're off to a good start. If you're drawing directly on the canvas try not to use too much pencil, because it gets mixed in with the paint. Also, don't worry too much about the sketch itself, focus on getting the details in the finished painting. As for the houndstooth, there are some artists who thrive on exact details, but it's not always necessary. All you really need are hints of a pattern, dashes of darker color in the highlighted portions of the jacket will give the impression of printed fabric. Thanks for asking and sharing a work-in-progress, it's not an easy thing to do! I hope this helps, and I hope you post the finished product, too. - Laci
oh, yea this is shayna...
i don't get into detail... everything i do is half assed i don't know if i do it on purpose or what, but i know how to a lot of things half way. i don't know anything about paint or how to use it to shade.. so mostly i paint the main points and then go in with a sharpie and do like etching shading.. hatching i think its called... the other one i did is on that "flowers and bugs" page, to the right, of stephanie and her boyfriend. i like trying.
...and thank you.
I was pretty sure it was you Shayna, because of the painting on your myspace - which turned out really well.
I hear you on the half-assed shit, it's the same as what we were talking about with the fabric and unfinished projects. I'm trying to get better at that.
Also, I may have forgotten how to paint, so I'd like to do a series that's high in quantity just to practice, I'm thinking of headshots of various people wearing the same wig (cause I went into a wig store and I LOVED IT!) Just a ton of them, as a warm-up of sorts.
thats a cool idea. i watched this movie once called Employee of the Month [not the one with dane cook] and in their bedroom there were three paintings of barbie headshots. they were old barbies, i think, because they all had short hair. i really liked them.
their short hair reminded me of the wig thing...thats all. i hope i get to see them because i really like those paintings on your artist profile.
i love paul newman so much it hurts sometimes.
